The internet circles I frequented have always used the derogatory “Fudd” term for shooters/ hunters whose beliefs were used to impede firearms ownership. Examples are “I grew up around guns and never needed to carry a pistol” or “if you can’t defend yourself with 6 shots you don’t deserve to carry that Tupperware Glock” or the all time favorite “you don’t need a high capacity magazine to hunt deer”

Being a firearms Luddite is totally fine in my book.

It’s not just “old guys” that can appreciate tried and true, widely available ammo, elegant beauty, and relative simplicity that older platforms and models offer. I’m 43 and It pains me that on one end the gun industry has seemed to proliferate low cost utility guns (think savage axis types) and at the other end high end precision tactical technology packed rigs and ammo and that aren’t needed for “practical” hunting distances of most hunters….after all, isn’t part of the joy of hunting getting closer not farther from your quarry? It would seem that like the economy, the gun industry gutted out the “middle class” of gun buyers.

Thankfully, having just returned from shot show, I did see a few offerings of not only the classics, but of modern renditions that seek to blend some new features with relatively traditional lines and real world hunting needs….

I am really enjoying seeing the new revolvers from Lipsey's - that are really classic along with being updated... Especially the whole Mountain Gun thing. Those look terrific.

Yes indeed! Funny you mention THAT.... I was walking up to see those as I realized Don Trump Jr was at that booth ~10 ft away chatting with the Lipseys folks and taking pics before carrying on with his Secret Service escort. :)

I assume you checked out he back wall of Lipseys? Ruger hawkeyes in 35 Whelen (Check our JVBenedicts videos on those) and 9.3x62.... also a few Ruger No 1s.

On a different note....I got to meet the owner of Springfield Armory who stopped at our suppler booth.... as a customer of their pistols and AR lines, I went to check out their booth. I'm liking this: https://www.springfield-armory.com/model-2020-series-rifles/model-2020-boundary-rifles/

For the money (sub ~$2000 on some sites) it feels like a "modern" custom back country rig (carbon barrel) but retains a hinged floor plate (versus their first release which was protruding magazine fed) and more traditional stock shapes. I also noticed that on the specs of their 7mm Rem Mag version, they publish a 1:8 twist rate that I would think would allow a handloader to run 7mm PRC sized bullets, while still retaining rem mag ammo availability? I'm not a handloader as of yet...so basing it on research.

Also....the Winchester modern model 70s (pre-64 controlled round feed).

Henry is also revamping their catalog, and there will be new configurations (grip style/lever size, barrel lengths) and finishes coming on the side gate and big boy series.

Seems like you had a great time at SHOT show! I'd like to meet Don Trump Jr someday. He seems like a good guy. You got to see some great stuff - and no I didn't attend. Maybe next year?

I've got what works for me that I've had for yrs. My pre 64 Mod 70 30-06 wears a 1970 Leupold 2x7. My 7 mag a 3.5x10 that replaced the VxII 3x9 that moved onto the 300 Wby. The other calibers I own have all been around before I could crawl. So guess I'm a Fudd and wear that badge with pride.

Excellent! Me too.

You nailed it Guy! I am only 41 and yet my tastes in guns would have those who don’t know me label me as a Fudd arbitrarily.

It’s not that I resist new technology, it’s that the supposed advantages offered seldom if ever truly supplant the older, ubiquitous and proven cartridges.

We can argue until Kingdom come which cartridge is “best” for whatever our purposes require, but in the end anything that keeps us hunting and shooting is a good thing. Shoot what you like, opinions unsolicited be damned!

If we were sitting side by side I declare it would be like a broken record. I don't despise the latest and greatest but at the same time I don't see the need to change from something that works reliably. This reminds me of a conversation with a keyboard warrior on Facebook. In a handgun hunting group a new handgun hunter asked a legit question about deer hunting with a handgun. Several seasoned handgun hunters gave him sound advice. Then there was this guy......... he refuted everything that was told to the newbie. I let him know that he was wrong which he was. This began a hilarious back and forth conversation. What the "expert didn't realize is that 60 years of life has taught me how to be comically treacherous. I was gathering intel from each of his keystrokes. Once I figured him out I asked him how many deer he had killed with a handgun. He dodged the question. I asked the same question several times. He finally answered that he had killed one. At this point I interjected that in other words he was reciting things from posts that he had read and had no experience to back up what he was saying. He said "Don't let my lack of experience be misinterpreted as a lack of knowledge." And therein lies the great rift between fudds and those that call us fudds. Proud to be a fudd.
