If an officer sees a lethal threat to others, and the officer involved did, that officer is to take action to protect those endangered. The officer who shot was protecting other officers who were well within range of the suspect's shotgun. It was reviewed. No officers were even accused of wrongdoing.
Yup. I was the SWAT sniper team leader for 12 years. This hadn't turned into a SWAT call at the time of the shooting. Multiple patrol officers had arrived, contained the scene and were trying to contact the individual, then he started threatening to shoot them instead of himself. Rough night for everyone.
Bolt action Remington 700 in 308 Winchester with a varmint-weight barrel. Mine was accurate enough to produce 2.5" - 3.0" groups at 600 yards if I was shooting well. Federal Gold Medal match ammunition with the 168 grain Sierra HPBT matchking bullet. That was pretty standard at the time. I supplied my own rifle because the first one the PD issued me was pretty awful. I still have it and have done well with it in matches and have done a little hunting with it.
